I visited the Menomonie Wastewater Plant this fine morning. During the tour, it made me wonder why someone would choose to work there. i mean the smell was horrible, all the time. as in it never went away. some places were better than others but it was pretty raunchy. We learned about all of the steps that are taken to clean the water and what happens with all of the materials that are taken out of it. by the end of the tour i realized the impact that the plant was making on the society around us. someone commented that that whole place smelt like mexico, and she was right because they don't have plants like we do to clean our water waste. they dump it back into streams that eventually lead to the ocean and then we go on vacation there to swim with the dolphins and take pictures on the beach. with out these water treatment plants, where would all the shit go? literally. Anyone who first arrives at a plant would question why anyone would want to work there, but after the tour i saw why someone would choose that career.
First of all, someone has to do it. And secondly, it could be found it very rewarding. The people who are dealing with our water are doing a dirty job but they are doing it for all of us. They are putting water back in to the Red Cedar River that is actually cleaner than it was originally. they make it so that we can go boating in the river and water ski behind the wake. with out them there would be diseases spreading of all different types. someone could find that really rewarding and thats why they would choose that profession
A common saying is "those who cant do, teach." well this could be true in some cases. but teaching is also very rewarding. helping someone understand something or guiding them when learning certain skills can be very rewarding. you will be there and see the moment that what it is your pushing finally gets through and they can now use it to be more successful!
All careers have something rewarding to them. if all that is rewarding to is is only getting your pay check every friday, then you have a job. a career is something that you can be passionate about and have the urge to succeed.

Facebook is Evil and I Love it.
So i just attempted commenting on someones blog that was also about Facebook, and since it didn't work, I am just going to make it one of my posts.
In her blog she said how when anyone opens up a web page the first thing they do is log onto Facebook. and I cant argue with that. i normally only type in face and then my computer recognizes what i want to go to (Facebook) and i hit enter and i am already logged in. This only doesn't happen if i am going onto my computer to look up a youtube video and soon after you can be sure that i will add a tab and be on Facebook. Even if i was just on five min ago and know that there is nothing new, because i scrolled up and down my news and mini feed about three times, i can always find someone to creep on. and that sounds creepy, but only because it is and we all do it.
also in the blog, she questioned if Facebook is messing with our worlds productivity. i would have to say yes. i know that Facebook is the most commonly use tool for procrastination and i know this because multiple people have made statuses..on Facebook.. about it. people can be chatting with one person, creeping on another, and video chatting with their mom all at the same time! now i know that i have never done this because can not multitask for my life, but i sure that others have and do. now what is so important on Facebook that we need to be constantly updated. nothing. in fact, we should be studying for our bio test that our professor so kindly scheduled for halloween. Facebook is used for boredom, communication, creeping, procrastination, uploading pictures to improve your profile, and mainly... creeping. thats all it really is when it comes down to it. nothing about it is productive and its awesome.
on a different note: aside from procrastination and doing nothing for our productivity, i think that Facebook and other digital ways of communication is messing with our generation socially.
when i was in 6th grade i had this boy friend that you could say was my online boy friend only he so wasn't. our lockers were next to each other, we had three classes together, and lunch at the same time. but the only way we ever talked was with instant messaging. now texting had not made it big yet and Facebook wasn't invented so IMing was the way to go. we would talk for hours and say things that we would have never said in person and then we would get to school the next day and it was like we didn't even know each other. kids now can be texting and sitting right next to each other! i don't know about you but i think its kinda messed up..
also, when my parents were my age and younger, if they wanted to hang out with someone, they would go to their house, knock on their door and hope that they were home. and if they just wanted to talk they would call their home phone. today, i never answer my home phone because i know that its not for me. if anyone is trying to get ahold of me, they will call or text me. even my doctor has my cell phone number and calls that first.
our generation is becoming so dependent on the instance results that we are getting and we start to expect results back faster than humanly possible. when i was in High School we would take tests on these remotes that would give us our test score as soon as we submitted it. or on a scantron, if everyone finished early enough, the teacher could run them through and give them back before we went on to our next class. I recently turned a paper in to my English 101 teacher and its driving me crazy that i don't have it back yet!
In conclusion, Facebook and all of our new technologies yes can be helpful in many ways, but what is it doing to us socially and to our expectations?

Waiting untill your 21.. really?
Now i know that when my parents were my age, it was legal for them to drink. The drinking age was 19 in MN and 18 in WI. and now that im here, i have to wait until I am 21 (legally that is).
If I am old enough to vote for who will run my country, and I can also fight and die for my country, why is it that I am not old enough to sit down and have a beer. Here in the US we have the highest drinking age in the western hemisphere. We also have the most problems related to drinking. this is because we are not able to experiment in safe environments. We have to hide it until its legal. No matter how hard the police try to crack down on underage drinking, its still going to happen and its only going to go further under ground. kids are dying because their friends are afraid to call for help when they have had to much to drink because they know that they will get punished for it.
I do know that the drinking age was raised for a reason and that it has lowered the amount of drinking and driving, but if drinking and driving was the problem, that is what should have been addressed. maybe the amount of under aged drinkers has gone down, but binge drinking has been constantly increasing since the 90's. In most other countries, drinking is a casual thing and people learn at a young age how to handle them selves when drinking. In the US, people get rough and fight when that is rarely seen in other parts of the world.
I know that we have the technology to help fix the problem of drinking and driving. I know that after a certain amount of DUI's, someone is required to have a breathanalyzer in their car in order for the vehicle to start. If that was in all cars, it would not be possible for a person under the influence to start their car. and i know that if i had children, i would buy them that feature.
Before I was even a senior in High School I knew of SIX people who had gotten pulled over and given DUI's. one of them even totaled someone else's car. so when I say that I think that the drinking age should be lowered, it is not because I am a 19 year old college student. its because I have seen what underage drinking can do to people and I know that if everyone was more educated and had more experience, there would be less tragedies related to underage drinking.
When someone turns 16 you don't just hand over the keys, so why should drinking be any different.
A uneducated driver can be just as dangerous as an uneducated drinker.

The Roaring 20's
After the First World War, after women entered the work world, it was hard for anyone to go back to the way it was before. Women were working and making something besides cooking and cleaning. They were redefining who women are and what their role in society is. They changed their look, their way of life and they changed it forever.
Not only did they cut their hair but they cut their skirt hems. They started smoking cigarets and drinking out in the open; Although, this was the time of the prohibition (1920- 1933). They danced in night clubs provocatively and dated openly. Petting became more and more popular as parties were made just for it. women were much more casual about "hooking up." They created their own slang for getting alcohol, having sex, and getting engaged. These women were fighting against the tradition life that they were supposed to have.
There was a different group of older women that looked down on the flappers because they saw them as unworthy of the rights they had fought so hard for. Women could finally vote and many flappers were not even interested in politics. With the two sides, does that mean one is wrong? or do they balance each other out? Will there ever be anything like this again or will woman's progress go unnoticed?
